HRP Front Assembly
Probably the best place to start on this assembly is with the major items:-chimney base, perch and saddle brackets.
Before commencing the machining, one should take a look at the casting in relation to the drawing and decide which surface will not be machined, and then chuck the casting so that the non-machined parts will be held in the truest possible manner. The machined surfaces will automatically be true after machining.
Fitting of the front assembly is simple enough. However, the bolts securing the chimney base to the smokebox tube (BURRELL) should be fitted square to the surface of the chimney base and not on a line passing through the centre of the smokebox. As on the original engines the securing nuts will then lie quite level on the casting and no spot facing will be required. The bolt heads will anchor securely enough on the inside of the smokebox tube. It will be desirable to leave making the hole for the exhaust pipe until later, when the position can be checked on assembly. Having completed the main machining of the major items there are various handles and fittings which can now be made to complete the smokebox door assemblies.
