HRP Boiler Inspection

With the first test, all lagging plates must be removed from the boiler. All feed water devices should be fitted (injector, mechanical water pump and check valves) in addition the pressure gauge and safety valves will normally need to be fitted (although the safety valves must be locked down during the test). This will satisfy the inspector that the boiler and its ancillary equipment are of a proper standard; he is, entitled to examine them.

When arranging for a boiler test, always ask the inspector by letter or phone, before his visit, what size screw threads are on his hydraulic pump connection, so that you can arrange to make a suitable adaptor ready for the test; only one connection will be required since his test pump has a built in check valve and pressure gauge.

Generally speaking model boilers are accepted for insurance by a limited number of companies specialising in model insurance.

Usually manholes and mud doors are required in the steel boilers for them to be acceptable for insurance, whereas companies rarely insist on this in copper boilers although they need an efficient drain plug.

Your boiler drawing should be available to the boiler inspector, preferably before the test, and you should, where ever possible, make it easy for the inspector to readily measure the thickness of your boiler plates. He cannot take your word for their thickness (even on a new boiler), but must satisfy himself, although it may mean drilling the boiler plates when they cannot otherwise be measured.
